Snowshoeing in North Macedonia can be a wonderful experience, offering enthusiasts the opportunity to explore pristine snow-covered landscapes variety of terrains suitable for snowshoeing, including gentle slopes and more challenging trails. The mountainous landscapes provide opportunities for both beginners and experienced snowshoers.North Macedonia is known for its warm hospitality and delicious traditional cuisine. After a day of snowshoeing, you can enjoy local dishes in nearby towns and villages.
You meet the guide at the airport. Depending on your arrival time, we will be able to visit the city of Skopje and later transfer to Mavrovo National Park, 1.30h. drive accommodation in a guest house in Mavrovo.
After breakfast, we drive 20min. to the starting point of the hike. The first part of the hike is an oak forest, after it’s open space to the peak called Sandaktas 2000m. our goal for today. We finish the hike, we go to the village of Zirovnica in 30 minutes. drive, meet with the host, and within 10 minutes. We walk to his house, have dinner, and have accommodation in the guest house.

Today we go to the peak of Ploca 2050m.at Desat Mountain on the border with Albania. In the beginning, we start on an unpaved road in the oak forest, after is open space. The peak is a borderline with Albania and Macedonia with beautiful views. We go back to the village and we have a transfer to the village of Gorna Belica at 1420m. 1.40h. drive accommodation and dinner in the guest house. Depending on the snow conditions, there’s a chance that we don’t go all the way to the house with a car, maybe 10 minutes. walk.

We start hiking from the village, hiking to Carevec peak 2100m. Borderline with Macedonia and Albania. Duration of the tour (4-5h.length 12km, Altitude difference 700m). After the hike, we go to the Ohrid city with a 40-minute drive. A Short walk, sightseeing of the city, have dinner and accommodation in the city.

The tour starts at about 1650m. This road is not cleaned regularly so the ski tour might start 100m lower in conditions of heavy snow on the road. After 40min. We walk out of the forest, where, usually in good weather conditions, we can start having a nice view of Ohrid Lake. We here have another 1.30 h. touring to the Magaro 2255m.highest peak of Galicica National Park, with beautiful views of the Ohrid and Prespa Lake. After the hike, we transferred to Bitola City, accommodation in the city of Bitola. The duration of the tour is 4 to 5 hours. Length 12km, Altitude difference 800m.
After breakfast, we have 20min. Drive to the start point at 1360m. Maybe we will use a 4×4 jeep to get to the snow line. We continue to the peak of Pelister 2601m. From the peak, a beautiful view of the Prespa Lake, Mount Olympus in Greece, and Rila in Bulgaria. From the peak, we returned to Bitola city. Later, we will have dinner in the guest house in Dihovo village. The duration of the tour is 7 to 8 hours. Length 23km. Altitude difference 1240m.
The last hike is in the National Park Pelister to the big mountain lake one of the trademarks in the Pelister National Park. We have a 15-minute drive from the city. The trail starts from the weekend settlement Nize pole at 1170 meters and passes through mountain pasture areas and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. We have 3 hours going up to the lake at 2218m, and 2 hours. Back to the car. After a short rest, we have to transfer to Skopje for 2 hours. drive. Later we have the last Dinner and accommodation for this trip.
Guests will need to arrive in Skopje or Ohrid airport on or before the Start date.
Requirements
You don’t need to have a lot of experience, you will also learn how to use the snowshoes every day on the tour. The ascents will be between 700 and 1000 meters with a light daypack.
Weather and touring conditions
The weather can be very changeable, meaning fog, rain, and sunshine can alternate on the same day. We can expect temperatures from -2 to -10c between 2000 and 2600 meters per month in February. The tour program will be adapted to the conditions.

This is a round trip, and you will visit different regions and mountains in Macedonia. We will have transfers from different areas and cities with durations of 20 minutes to 2.30 hours. We stay in three-star hotels and guest houses with comfortable rooms.
Culinary delights
We enjoy full board during these days. In the cities, we enjoy meals either in a hotel or in a restaurant in the city. At hiking time, we will have a picnic lunch. The cuisine in this regions is hearty and plentiful. If you have any food intolerances, we ask that you organize your meals. Vegetarian meals are possible.
Money
In Macedonia, the denar is the currency used. In Kosovo, you can pay in euros. You can bring euros with you. Exchange money at a local exchange office. ATMs are in cities. You can pay in restaurants and stores with a credit card.
Equipment
Complete winter hiking equipment and casual leisure clothing with light trekking shoes or winter boots for your stay in the hotels. We will provide the snowshoes.
