Climbing to the country’s highest peak is a great way to enjoy both a unique adventure and a great vantage point during your travels. On this hiking trip, we hike peaks on the borderline with Macedonia and Albania. We will hike up to Mount Korab 2764m. Korab is the highest peak of Macedonia and Albania Shara Mountains, with Titov peak(2747m.) Baba mountain, with Pelister peak (2601m.)close to the border with Grece. These are the best summits. Furthermore, these mountains are often cultural and historical landmarks, which adds a plus to the climb. The extra experience will be to learn about Macedonian culture while staying in historic towns and villages, the traditional warm hospitality of your hosts, and the taste of traditional food and wine.
Your guide will meet you at the airport. Depending on the arrival time, and if time allows it, a short sightseeing tour of Skopje. Next, we will be transferred to Popova Sapka, a ski resort at 1750m. Here we spend the first night.
Our hiking day will start early in the morning. We will go up to 2747 meters high to the Titov Vrv (Tito peak). It is the highest peak of the Šar Mountains, very close to the border with Kosovo. From the peak, we will descend back to the hotel short beer break in the hotel and we will be transferred to the hotel located in the Mavrovo National Park. The duration of the hike for today is (7 to 9 hours, 21 km. with a height difference of 1,050 m.).
Today we start early from the hotel to the start point with a 45-minute drive with a jeep on an unpaved road First, we need to be checked at the border police station on the road, and once we are, we continue to our starting point, at 1450m. The goal of the day will be to ascend to 2764 meters and climb Mount Korab, the highest peak in Macedonia. After descending from the peak, we go back to the hotel. The duration of this hiking day is (8 to 9 hours, 19 km, with 1325 m. altitude difference).
The hiking trail starts from the highest village in this region, the village of Bitushe. 1030m. The trail is mild at the beginning and continues along thick beech woodland until it reaches Lake Lokuv. The hiking continues to the border ridge between Macedonia and Albania. all the way to Velivar peak 2373m. After the descent from the peak, we have a 2-hour transfer to Ohrid city, where we will spend the night. As part of our transfer to Ohrid, we will stop for some refreshment and coffee, and visit the Monastery of St. John the Baptist. Then, we will go to our accommodation in Ohrid city. The duration of this hiking day is (7 to 8 hours, 16 km, with a 1343 m altitude difference).
This day, It’s planned to enjoy a fine rest day in the city of Ohrid and the surroundings. We have an option for a guided city tour followed by a fine lunch by the lake. Or we can have other activities like Boat sailing, kayaking, sup riding, etc.
This mountain is not one of the highest mountains in Macedonia, but it is worth climbing and seeing the two lakes, Ohrid and Prespa, from the top. In the morning, check out of the hotel, and we have 40 minutes. Drive to the starting point of the hike at 1560 m. Duration of today’s hike is 4 to 5 hours total length of 8.5km. with an altitude change of 700m. During the hiking and from the peak of Magaro 2255m. we have a beautiful view of the two largest lakes in Macedonia – the Ohrid Lake and Prespa Lake. From the peak, we descend to the starting point, and we have 1 hour. drive to Bitola city, where we will spend the night. On the way to the city, we can stop for coffee by the Prespa lake.
The last hiking day is for Pelister Peak the highest peak in the Baba mountain range and also the third-highest peak in Macedonia. The tour starts from 1360 m. At the Info Center of National Park North side of the mountain, and finishes on the South side in Village Nize pole. On the way to the peak also we will also visit two mountain lakes called Pelister Eyes. Most of the trail passes through a high mountain area with magnificent relief form is comprised of a large number of stone blocks, river rocks, and beautiful views. From the summit of Pelister at 2601m, we will enjoy fantastic views of the surrounding Macedonian mountains and all the way to Mount Olympus in Greece, Rila, and Pirin in Bulgaria. At the end of the hike, we need to transfer for 2.30h. to Skopje city, where we will spend the last night of this trip.
The length of the tour is 24 km. Duration of the tour: 9-10 hours. starting point: 1360 m. ending point altitude 2601 m. height Difference: 1240 m.
Participants will need to arrive in Skopje or Ohrid airport on or before the Start date.
Requirements
We’ll be hiking mostly on good trails. You’ll need to have the fitness, stamina for hiking stages of up to 5 to 9 hours. No previous technical experience is required. A certain sense of adventure, flexibility, and a willingness to forgo comfort are also important.
Weather and touring conditions
The weather can be very changeable, meaning fog, rain, and sunshine can alternate on the same day. The tour program will be adapted to the conditions.
Accommodation
This is a round trip, and you will visit different regions and mountains in Macedonia. We will have transfers from different areas and cities with durations of 20 minutes to 2.30 hours. We stay in three-star hotels with comfortable rooms.
Culinary delights
We enjoy full board during these days. In the cities, we enjoy meals either in a hotel or in a restaurant in the city. At hiking time, we will have a picnic lunch. The cuisine in this region is hearty and plentiful. If you have any food intolerances, we ask that you organize your meals. Vegetarian meals are possible.
Money
In Macedonia, the denar is the currency used. You can exchange money at a local exchange office you can bring euros with you. ATMs are in cities. You can pay in restaurants and stores with a credit card.
Equipment
Complete hiking equipment and casual clothing for the evenings in the cities.
